The book has taken a dramatic turn or events. It is revealed that Lakshmi was deceived and not sold to be a maid in the city, she was sold to be a sex slave. After her long journey, she gets brought to a house full of others girls in her situation and is told she cannot leave until her debt is paid off. In order to pay off her debt, she must sleep with men. Being that Lakshmi is new to the house, she is locked away in a room alone where the men come and pay a higher price for her. Lakshmi is resistent and is then given medication each night that makes her groggy and unresponsive. During the day Lakshmi sits alone and is often beat with a whip by the owner of the house and the owner of the girls.
