On the way to the city, Lakshmi gets to experience many new things she has never encountered before. Lakshmi got to ride in the back of a wagon for the first time with her auntie. Once they arrived to the new house Lakshmi will be a maid at, her auntie gives her a new dress and a pair of shoes. Auntie told Lakshmi she needs to forget about her old country ways of not changing in front of others and not wearing shoes. She also gives Lakshmi tips such as not to use the same rag you wipe the floor with to do the dishes. Lakshmi is frightened that the new family she lives with is going to be cruel or she is going to mess up and dissapoint her family. This is a lot of pressure for a little girl and I think Lakshmi is handling herself very well.
