Sold by Patricia McCormick started off slow, but eventually got interesting. It is a story about a young girl, Lakshmi, who gets sold to be a maid in the city. Lakshmi's stepfather has a gambling problem and keeps trading all of her family's possessions away. Eventually, when they run out of money Lakshmi has to drop out of school in order to support her family. I ended on the part where she made it to the city and is preparing to start working in her new home as a maid.
