After some time passes in the house, Lakshmi is brought to live downstairs in a shared room with the rest of the girls. The only thing that separates them is a thin sheet surrounding the bed. Lakshmi starts to keep track of the debt she owes, careful to not spend any unnecessary rupees in order to leave faster. Lakshmi has also met a little boy in the house who begins to teach her how to read and gives her something to look forward to each day. Living downstairs, Lakshmi now has to try to seduce her clients into chosing her in order to make more money faster so she can leave. One day, an American client comes and tells Lakshmi he can rescue her. Being told that Americans fool the girls into thinking that they can escape, they only end up shaming them by letting them run around exposed in the streets; Lakshmi is hesitent to believe him. When one day the man comes back for her with the police department and Lakshmi runs free from her hiding spot and successfully escapes with the American man and police department.
